Tax amendments

Fix a return already filed.

An accepted return isn't the last word. If income was left off, a credit was missed or the filing status was wrong, an amended return (federal Form 1040-X, Georgia Form 500X) corrects it — whether we prepared the original or not.

You generally have three years from the original filing date, or two years from the date you paid the tax, to claim a refund on an amended return — so older years have a real deadline.

When an amendment makes sense

Income you didn't report

A late 1099-NEC, brokerage 1099-B, gambling W-2G or a second W-2 that arrived after you filed.

A credit or deduction you missed

Education credits, child and dependent care, EITC, energy improvements, or itemising when the standard deduction was taken.

Wrong filing status or dependants

Head of household filed as single, a dependant claimed on the wrong return, or a marriage or separation mid-year.

A corrected form from the issuer

Your employer or broker sent a corrected W-2c or 1099 after the original return was accepted.

Someone else prepared it

You had the return done elsewhere and the numbers don't look right. We review before we amend, and tell you plainly if no amendment is needed.

An IRS notice says the numbers don't match

A CP2000 is often answered with a response rather than a 1040-X — we'll tell you which one your notice calls for.

Simple math errors usually don't need an amendment — the IRS corrects those and writes to you. Bring us the letter and we'll tell you which situation you're in before you pay for anything.
