For Independent Work

Self-Employed Tax Preparation

For independent contractors, freelancers, gig and rideshare drivers, sole proprietors, single-member LLCs and anyone balancing a W-2 with 1099 income. We prepare your return with your business records in view.

What we review together

Schedule C & 1099 income

We prepare Schedule C with your individual return, reconcile 1099-NEC and 1099-K forms against your records, and account for income that did not come with a form. This includes freelance work, rideshare and delivery apps, a side hustle or a single-member LLC.

Expenses & supporting records

We review categories such as supplies, software, insurance, advertising and professional fees against your business records. Bring receipts, statements and a clear separation of business and personal spending so each expense can be evaluated.

Home office & vehicle use

If you use space at home or a vehicle for business, we review how it is used and the records available. A mileage log, trip details and home-office measurements help determine what may be reported under the applicable rules.

Self-employment tax & estimated payments

Unlike W-2 wages, independent-work income generally has no employer withholding. We explain how self-employment tax and income tax are calculated on the return, review payments already made, and discuss whether quarterly estimated payments apply going forward.

More than one income stream

A W-2 job alongside 1099 work, several clients or multiple apps can all belong on the same return. We review each income source and its records together to avoid counting the same payment twice.

Self-employed tax questions

What forms do self-employed people file?
Many sole proprietors report business income and expenses on Schedule C with Form 1040, and calculate self-employment tax on Schedule SE. You may receive Forms 1099-NEC or 1099-K, but income can be reportable even without one. Your exact forms depend on your circumstances.
What expenses may be deductible?
Ordinary and necessary business expenses may include supplies, software, advertising, insurance and qualifying home-office or vehicle costs. Eligibility depends on the facts and supporting records; personal expenses are not business deductions.
Can you prepare a Schedule C?
Yes. We prepare Schedule C as part of a self-employed tax return and review your income, expenses and documentation with you before filing.
What records should I bring?
Bring your 1099-NEC and 1099-K forms, any W-2s, income reports from apps or clients, business bank statements, expense receipts, mileage records, home-office information, estimated tax payment records and your prior-year return if available.
Do I need to make quarterly payments?
Possibly. If your withholding and other tax payments are not enough to cover the year, estimated payments may be required. We can review your combined W-2 and independent-work income and discuss payment timing based on your situation.
